  1. Kidlat Tahimik: “SARILING DUENDE” - With all his stellar accomplishments in realm of filmmaking, Kidlat Tahimik reiterates that he is not a cinematic genius. “I simply allowed my own duende [spirit of inspiration] to speak out,” he says. Kidlat Tahimik stresses that while his filmmaking style works wonderfully for him, it may not works just as well for other people. He is clear-cut in his goals for his films and that is to let his duende break free from what he calls the “colonial cocoon.” His way is the anti-thesis of the Hollywood formula calculated to appeal to the lowest common denominator for maximum profit.

Kidlat Tahimik admits though that the digital way offers many practical advantages, chief among which is speed of production. “Technically, it’s easier to reach the finish line with that,” he explains. The legendary filmmaker describes the traditional process of filmmaking as tedious and costly. “But it definitely posed a greater challenge to an artist’s own duende,” he adds.
