THE MODERN LIFE (France)

This the last part of Depardon's triptych "Profils paysans" about what it is like to be a farmer today in an isolated highland area. "La Vie Moderne" examines what has become of the persons he has followed for ten years while featuring younger people who try to farm or raise cattle or poultry, come hell or high water.

HOW TO LIVE IN THE GERMAN FEDERAL REPUBLIC (Germany)

A critical dissection of modern life in Germany. Composed of thirty-two short scenes taken from instructional and training classes (on everything from stripping, to childbirth, to police tactics), Farocki's intention is to reveal Germany as a place where nothing occurs without rehearsal and preparation. 

CORRESPONDENCE (Spain / USA)

José Luis Guerin takes an idea coming from Jonas Mekas: film is a response to life. With this concept in mind, they start exchanging a series of letters and develop a personal relationship which reveals the impressions and similarities of two filmmakers linked by their wish to share opinions and concerns. They establish a unique relationship through a correspondence displayed in the eyes of the viewer and in search of his sympathy, thus creating a new intimate space for thought. Correspondences: José Luis Guerin-Jonas Mekas shows the experimentation with the expressive language and the visual reflections of two artists who have found a new form of creation and use of images. The series of exchanged letters involves the activation of different times: the shooting of the first delivery, opening a road at random; the waiting time; the reply, a new letter stemming from the previous one and demanding a new one; and, finally, the time of screening.

DAD (Slovenia)

A lyrical meditation on the father/son relationship, culminating in one of the most soul-stirring social commentaries in contemporary Slovenian cinema.

It is a fine Sunday. After a long, much too long lapse, the son visits his father. The father is overjoyed at the visit but feels insecure – will they get along? He decides to share with his son what he likes best– he takes him angling. Yet is seems that the son is not so overwhelmed by the pastime. A certain distance becomes tangible between them. Rather than force his world upon the son, the father decides to enter his son’s. The tension and distance, felt at first between them, are soon dispelled. Their worlds merge into one. But at the end of the day the son leaves and father is alone again. Monday is a new day.

OUR BELOVED MONTH OF AUGUST (Portugal)

In the heart of Portugal, amid the mountains, the month of August is abuzz with people and activity. Emigrants return home, set off fireworks, fight fires, sing karaoke, hurl themselves from bridges, hunt wild boar, drink beer, make babies. If the director and film crew had got straight to it and resisted the temptation to join in the festivities the synopsis would come down to: Aquele Querido Mês de Agosto follows the affective relationship between a father and daughter, and the daughters cousin, all musicians in a dance band. So, love and music then. 

SONGS FROM THE SECOND FLOOR (Sweden)
Dir: Roy Andersson. 1hr 38min

A film poem inspired by the Peruvian poet César Vallejo. A story about our need for love, our confusion, greatness and smallness and, most of all, our vulnerability. It is a story with many characters, among them a father and his mistress, his youngest son and his girlfriend. It is a film about big lies, abandonment and the eternal longing for companionship and confirmation.

THE TREE OF WOODEN CLOGS (Italy)
Dir: Ermanno Olmi. 3hr 6min

The life inside a farm in Italy at the beginning of the century. Many poor country families live there, and the owner pays them by their productivity. One of the families has a very clever child. They decide to send him to school instead of make him help them, although this represents a great sacrifice. The boy has to wake up very early and walk several miles to get to the school. One day the boy's shoes break when returning home, but they do not have money to buy other. What can they do?

EDWIN'S SHORTS (Indonesia)
Dir: Edwin. 1hr 30min

Alexis Tioseco wrote this of Edwin's short films: Refined yet playful in aesthetic, often with leaps in logic, Edwin has carved out a unique place - and represents a unique voice - among filmmakers in Southeast Asia. Hailed by many as one of the finest short filmmakers in the region (he has exhibited his work in Rotterdam, Oberhausen, and the Director's Fortnight at Cannes respectively), there is a force to his aesthetic, a punch to his imagery and use of sound, and a certain degree of modernism in his insistence on working with celluloid.

Says Sister Angela, the woman of the wind: "I’m not just having sex, Father. Yes, there is lust. I’m not a hypocrite. But my main discourse is the purpose of this body. To be very blunt, Father, we only live once. I want to understand and feel the use of my breasts, my vagina, my mouth, and all parts of my body. In my view, I can only move to the next level, on the so-called spirituality, once I’ve addressed the issues of my physical being. In my view, there is a need to destroy that physical being, our animalistic nature, before we can achieve true spirituality. Let’s crush the animal in the man, Father. That’s fundamental to me."

EX PRESS (Philippines)
Dir: Jet Leyco. 1hr 30min

Inspired by a true story in Naga, Bikol, where the new Philippine National Railways train was derailed. "Ex Press" is the first feature film of Jet Leyco. Part documentary, part dream. All scenes were shot in one take. Spontaneous combustion. 

BREATHER [PAHINGA] (Philippines)
Dir: Khavn De La Cruz. 1hr 40min

If films were time machines, what memory would you yank from your past and preserve? A tale of two men--one hopeful, the other desperate--"Breather" takes place in the last two weeks of the filmmaker's life a month before his father died. 
Like a page torn from a diary that hasn't been written yet, it is, for Khavn, an oddly contemplative retreat into the warm ache of nostalgia and the inevitability of abrupt goodbyes.

MAPANG-AKIT (Philippines)

"Mapang-akit" is an offshoot of a documentary project made with an Icelandic filmmaker and uses the outtakes from the Hudas Hudas festival in Antique, where a community bonds over a large effigy of Judas Iscariot during Holy Week. Amidst it is a found story of a man who returns home to his death after pursuing a woman in a neighboring village.
