Christmas comes to UP
UP Film Institute joins the rest of the UP Diliman community to distinctly usher in the holiday season with a special run for Jeffrey Jeturian’s Bisperas – winner of the Winds of Asia Grand Prize in the recent Tokyo International Film Festival.
Screenings are set for the dramatic film at the Cine Adarna of the UPFI Film Center in UP Diliman for two straight days on Dec 5 Mon and Dec 6 Tue at 5 and 7 p.m. with admission at a popular price.
“Bisperas” earlier swept the Directors’ Showcase at this year’s Cinemalaya with five awards including Best Picture. Direk Jeffrey is most celebrated for “Kubrador” (2006) which won for him the Fipresci International Critics Prize in Moscow. Another film, “Tuhog,” revived Philippine presence in Venice in 2001 when it was selected for its upstream competition then called Cinema of the Present.
Direk Jeffrey’s latest directorial effort for the big screen, “Bisperas” pries into the burglarized abode of a middle-class family on the eve of Christmas to stumble on cracks that tear apart its members.
The special showcase for “Bisperas” runs parallel to this year’s Cine Veritas – UP Film Institute’s annual human rights festival – topbilled by Adolfo Alix’s Romeo at Juliet (Dec 5, 6, 8), Martin Cabrera’s Agleon (Dec 8 and 10), Joenar Pueblo’s Dagyang (Dec 6 and 10), Joel Lamangan’s Deadline (Dec 10) and the full selection for EDSAngangdaan: The Edsa Stories Film Festival (Dec 7) from Focus on the Global South-Philippines.
