Balitok (2012) Brief Description
Balitok (Ilocano term for Gold) captures a slice of life and reality of indigenous tribes (Kalanguya and Kankana-ey) practicing artisanal or small-scale mining in Nueva Vizcaya as their means of economic survival. The documentary follows the laborious stages of mining (from extracting the ore, milling, panning and heating) from the point of view of Ongan (13 yr old small-scale miner) and Mona (artisanal miner since 1960's). The documentary can also serve as case study in the over-all situation of small-scale mining in the Philippines. The lush, mountainous and mineral-rich province is one of the 23-28 Mining Priority Sites of the government.
