FRESH from its successful premiere at the UP Film Institute, "Kambyo" —a film about four boys who go on a life-changing road trip together—will be screened regularly at Robinsons Galleria, Robinsons Ermita and Robinsons Metro East starting July 9.

That "Kambyo"  was such a hit with those who trooped to the UP Film Institute is no surprise, because it is the latest offering from the team that made the acclaimed "Ang Lalaki Sa Parola"  and "Ang Lihim Ni Antonio." Digital Viva teamed up with the film outfit BeyondtheBox to come up with another masterpiece that is sure to delight audiences. As such, it is the most anticipated gay film of the season.

"Kambyo"—  which is directed by Jay Altarejos, the same man who helmed "Parola" and "Antonio"— is heavily favored to follow in Parola and Antonio’s footsteps, which broke box-office records when they were shown at the Robinsons theaters.

"Kambyo"  traces the lives of four boys: cousins Macky (Rayan Dulay, who made a splash in Bathhouse) and Manuel (played by Kenjie Garcia, who played the titular character in "Ang Lihim Ni Antonio"), their fun-loving friend Xavier (Harold Macasero) and his friend Aldo (Gabz del Rosario).

One day, Macky decides to hit the open road to look for his old friend Philip (Johnron Tanada) and takes his cousin with him. He and Manuel invite their friend Xavier to join them, who agrees, on the condition that his hunky friend Aldo—who he met just before they set off in search of Philip—be allowed to come along as well.

As the engine of Macky’s old van begins to accelerate, so do their relationships with each other. To make a long story short, things between the four traveling companions heat up, allowing hidden desires and pent-up emotions to find release.

Direk Jay says that the performances of his cast members—many of whom are making their acting debut in "Kambyo"—are something else and will give viewers another good reason to catch it. “They are competent and really good, even if they’re newcomers,” he says. “Willing silang gawin kung ano ‘yung kailangan ng eksena basta ipaliwanag lang sa kanila.”

That in itself is surprising, considering that most of his actors are straight, including Kenjie Garcia. “OK lang naman sa akin na gumawa ng mga ganung bagay,” he says, referring to the movie’s steamy love scenes. “Mag-aalangan pa ba ako dito, e bida ako sa movie na ‘to?”
