Cinemanila goes to Mindanao

Cinemanila will make its foray into Mindanao with the screening of 18 short films at the 4th Mindanao Film Festival being held at the Gaisano Mall in Davao City.

The short films which were part of the Young Cinema (Shorts in Competition and Shorts in Exhibition) categories of the recently held 10th Cinemanila International Film Festival would join 24 Mindanao short films also being exhibited in the country’s southernmost film festival.

“This is one of the most prolific year of the Mindanao Film Festival judging by the number of films we got, not just from Davao but also from Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Tagum Cities.” Kenth Bajo the Festival director said.

“We here in Mindanao have been missing out great films from Cinemanila and Cinemalaya, it’s a great thing that with the 18 Cinemanila short films our local filmmakers would be exposed to the works of other artists from other parts of the country.” Bajo said.

Among the shorts in the MFF include Amihan, Bunot, Esbat, Frou Frou shh..wag mo, Sabihin kay Itay, Inday Wanda, Kalawang na Ginto, Kamera, SURREAL RANDOM MMS TEXTS PARA ED INA, AGUI, TAN KAAMONG, YA MAKAIILIW ED SIKA: GUGURLIS ED BANUA, Tumbang Preso, Undertakers, #Café, Bulong, Pass, Walong Linggo, Trails of Water, Pagtakas sa Kawalan, Waiting Shed and the Artist is In.

Interestingly the shorts Waiting Shed and the Artist is In were made by former Eraserheads bandmates Ely Buendia (Waiting Shed) and Markus Adorro (The Artist is In).

Aside from the shorts,  Cinemanila Festival Director Tikoy Aguiluz will be one of the resource speakers of the First Mindanao Film Convention which is one of the major activities of the festival.

The Convention’s theme Crafting a Truly Mindanao Cinema, will tackle the trends and initiatives in the pursuit of a Mindanaoan cinema industry. It will also be graced by filmmaker Kidlat Tahimik.

The festival which opened last Dec. 14 with the Davao premiere of Cinemalaya’s Full-length finalist Concerto Davao Diary, will run until Dec. 21. All theatrical screenings including the Cinemanila shorts are being held at Gaisano Mall Cinema 4. The Film Convention slated Dec. 20-21 will be at the Ateneo de Davao College Campus while the Film Awards night which serves as the culminating event of the festival will be held on the 21st at the Venue Compound in Davao City.
