Dayo Gets Grade A from Cinema Evaluation Board
December 20, 2008 | Posted by Karla Maquiling at Web and Technology

The full-length animated film Dayo, which premiered at SM Megamall Friday night, was given a grade A rating by the Cinema Evaluation Board and will get a 100 percent amusement tax rebate. This special tax exemption is given only to films that the CEB and the Film Development Council of the Philippines deem as well crafted.

An official entry to the 2008 Metro Manila Film Festival, the animated feature by Cutting Edge Productions is said to be the first of its kind in the country that combines 2-D and 3-D animation, powered by Toon Boom using Macintosh and Linux platforms. Costing $1.3 million, Dayo employed paperless animation and involved more than 500 animators working from different cities all over the Philippines to make it to the December 2008 deadline.

Dayo is an ambitious project that aims to prove that Pinoy animators had the ability to come up with a unique animated film that was truly Pinoy but met world-class standards.

Cutting Edge executive producer Jessie Lasaten believes that the time is right. “The Philippines has been outsourcing animation and digital works for around two decades now.  It’s about time that we recognize our very own animators by creating original content that is proudly Pinoy,” he says.

Over the years, the Philippines has earned a reputation for being a “global animation haven.” In fact, Pinoy animators have worked on Lilo & Stitch, Finding Nemo, and the Flintstones Christmas Carol, among others.
