First Mindanao Film Convention held

The first film convention that tackles the paths taken towards the establishment of a Mindanao Cinema was held last Dec. 20-21 at the Dotterweich Hall of the Ateneo de Davao College Campus.
“The First Mindanao Film convention aims to reinforce a infant filmmaking movement here in Mindanao.” Kenth Bajo, Festival director of the Mindanao Film Festival said.
Bajo said that there are many initiatives on the establishment of a Mindanao Filmmaking movement and they hope that the convention will encapsulate their dreams the establishment of a Mindanao cinematic identity.
The film convention is one of the three main events that comprise the Mindanao Film Festival; aside from the theatrical exhibition of local films and the film awards nights.
Organized with the support of the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the Ateneo de Davao Humanities Department and the City Government of Davao, the convention featured several sessions delving on filmmaking and perspectives on Mindanao culture.
Various speakers include acclaimed film artist Kidlat Tahimik, Moro filmmaker Teng Mangansakan, Dabawenyo film director Sherad Sanchez, Cinemanila founder Tikoy Aguiluz, Dabawaneyo writer Don Pagusara, peace advocate Atty. Mary Ann Arnado, filmmaker Jags Garcia and NCCA film committee member Teddy Co. Also included in the speakers are those coming from the Intellectual Property Rights Office led by Atty. Loiue Calvario and Precious Leano.
The convention was attended by several local filmmakers, enthusiasts and students.
Many of which has been closely following the Film Festival.
“I learned many things about the convention, particularly the discussions during the open forum. I hope this will lead to better things for those of us interested in pursuing filmmaking here in Mindanao.” Said first-time filmmaker Zerich Bordios whose short film Anod is currently one of the films featured in the festival.
