Exhibit:

Bayan ni Nanding Versus the Post Modern World
Contemporary Responses To The Life And Work Of Fernando Amorsolo

After officially launching Manila Contemporary on 13 December 2008, the gallery opens the New Year with a critical take on the iconic Fernando Amorsolo. Curated by Jonathan Olazo, Bayan ni Nanding versus the Post Modern World: Contemporary Responses to the Life and Work of Fernando Amorsolo commences on Saturday, 17 January and runs until 7 February 2009.

Operating on the ambivalent responses of contemporary artists, Bayan ni Nanding seeks to review the relevancy of the first National Artist for the Visual Arts Fernando Cueto Amorsolo in art practice today. The exhibition is made up for thematic and critical responses. The former includes “modernizing” Amorsolo’s themes by appropriating his iconography and creating variations of his images. The critical direction on the other hand, looks at the infamous web of commercialism Amorsolo is mired into by the art public. Neither conclusive nor judgmental, these responses indicate the negative effect on the stature of Amorsolo.

Bayan ni Nanding versus the Post Modern World presents the responses of Ronald Achacoso, Pablo Baens Santos, Manuel Baldemor, Bencab, Bea Camacho, Kiri Dalena, RM de Leon, Manny Garibay, Alfredo Liongoren, Isa Lorenzo, Fernando Modesto, Wawi Navarroza, Romulo Olazo, Jucar Raquepo, Dan Raralio, Alwin Reamillo, Raul Rodriguez, Igi Rodriguez, Soler, Don Salubayba, Judy Freya Sibayan, Jay Yao, Rollie D. Yusi and Costantino Zicarelli.

Joining them is a class of Fine Art undergraduates from Amorsolo’s alma mater, University of the Philippines: Rinnie Abrugena, Catalina Africa, Dean Africa, Louie Ano-Os, Raymond Carlos, Francis Commeyne, Raphael Daniel David, Cian Dayrit, Paola Germar, Maria Jeona, Eunice Lacaste, Aldrin Olaguer, Melvin Pollero, Kaloy Sanchez, Alden Santiago, Joseph Soliman, Jerome Suplemento, Nikki Valenzuela and Leo Velasco.
