Through Republic Act No. 9521, the National Book Development Trust Fund (NBDTF) was established exclusively for the support and promotion of Filipino authorship and the completion of local manuscripts or research works for publication, especially in Science and Technology and in subject areas where locally-authored books are either few or non-existent. The monetary award to authors/writers allows them to complete the writing phase of a book-length manuscript eligible for publication.
Aside from the Local History and Culture category, three categories were also launched for applications of grants last November 2014:
- Food science and technology/organic agriculture/sustainable agriculture/agritourism;
- Traditional/integrative/tropical medicine; and
- Popular science.
Grantees of the three categories were announced last January 22, 2016.
