Hand Made Violence is Bembol Dela Cruz’s one-person exhibition that presents his confrontation with guns in two forms: first, in metal sheet with inscriptions, and second, in hyperrealist painting. The first form (words taken from gun license application forms that prohibit the acquisition of said license) is done in Braille. This invites the viewers to approach the works through the sense of touch (the way this writing system is supposed to be interpreted) and sight, giving them a more intimate way of reading these “violations of the surface”. The second form becomes a “cartographic sketch.” Guns (most of which were improvised) assume a criminal face as their unlicensed users describe and recall accounts about them. These instruments portrayed on canvas realize Dela Cruz’s fascination with them: the guns turn into ornaments that, like skin, become both surface and substance. The exhibit runs until September 5. Bembol Dela Cruz (b. 1976) received his bachelor’s degree from the College of Fine Arts in Studio Arts Department (major in painting) at the University of the Philippines, Diliman (2002). His photorealistic paintings -- which engage the audience with the concept of tattoos and other objects as surface, skin and sign -- made him the winner of the 8thAteneo Art Awards: Anatomy of Autonomy for the exhibit “House Blends”(2011) and got him an artist residency and exhibition grant at the Liverpool Hope University and Cornerstone Gallery (United Kingdom) in 2012.
