In our search of purpose, we will never find which version of ourselves will we discover in the desire of life.
Meditating on the search for the places she’s never been, Nea De Leon brings forth these emotions in silhouettes of herself in different forms; creating illusions of multiple versions for all the ‘what ifs’ in her life. In her art, as she sees it, what may become for her life if she ever did pursue her passion for travelling and tourism.
Placed in a setting where she thinks travel is the amount to absolute, the sites were modest and simplistic in form but with utter sense of self: dealing with self-realization, peace, and discovery.
Only if, what if…
“Here” is a show about all that. Every piece is deeply rooted on that sense of longingness for the place she seeks but could not reach. For the dreams that died, in squeezing the essence of life, and for all other things possessed while dreaming, visualizing, and imagining; then finding out that some dreams may only remain as fantasies that may never happen but it is okay, and will be okay.
While seeking for the marvels of life that may never happen, all those frustrations were put into this show. Nea De Leon creates woven-like paper quillings glued on the board of the canvases, delicately crafted and pasted together to fill the space the canvas provides.
Quilling is a technique on paper, done by rolling a strip of paper into coils creating shapes and objects. Originated in the Ancient Egypt then popularized in the 16th century by Italian nuns, decorating their reliquaries and holy pictures.
“Here” is the first solo show of Nea De Leon opening at Art Underground located at 814 Balagtas St., Barangay Addition Hills, Mandaluyong City on February 9, Saturday at 6pm. Influenced by his husband in supporting her art career, she creats intricate quills which feels like woven into the cloth itself. A graduate of Education major in MAPEH from the University of Rizal system – Angono Campus, Nea De Leon states that she has less to no formal training at all with art but a visually engaging output manifested out of her hobby of making quills and playing with papers.
