Staring and being lost in simplistic yet intriguing ways, Nea De Leon-Cardel’s pieces collectively celebrate a distant yet relatively personal memory — a memory of longing, reminiscing, and commemorating the very first man who she truly loved and cherished, her father.

The show, as the title suggests, is a tribute to her father and perhaps, all fathers and father-figures out there; to acknowledge and immortalize not just their names and consciousness but everything in between what can be perceived and not. “Haligi” is a thought we all want to immortalize, an acknowledgement of memories with our fathers that is inevitably in our hearts, not only to be remembered but immortalized in any way necessary.

From day-to-day experiences, to growing up and sharing milestones, the exhibit is a memoir Nea chooses to share with her audience. The works are woven in quilling, and shares the simplistic nature of her narrative yet still keeps the viewers hooked in each of her work; a perfect analogy of her material, process, and even the stories and how memories work. Simple yet intriguing, works that fascinate and captivate the interest of the viewer.

To echo, this show is a collection of the artist’s memories of her father and their simple ways of living in a semi-urban area of the Municipality of Angono, Rizal. It is a hail to her father and her homeland; to its stories and impressions, and a grand cry of “I love you” to someone very dear to her hoping it would reach the heavens.

This is the 2nd solo show of Nea de Leon – Cardel for Art Underground.
