pareidolia păr″ī-dō′lē-ə (n.): The perception of a recognizable image or meaningful pattern where none exists or is intended, as the perception of a face in the surface features of the moon.
(Merriam-Webster, 2020)
Perhaps it is instinct to see faces where there are none; and art gives the agency to make these impulses come to fruition. The portrait is a genre whose nature has metamorphosed through time. It’s an instrument of power, moral virtue, and dominance, while it has also been used as a tactic for subversion, critique, and counternarratives. Its tradition dates as far back as ancient Egypt, and it continues to evolve in contemporary times as the proliferation of portraits have become interwoven with the fabric of society. Pareidolia, presented by Galerie Roberto, reckons with the portrait today: what it can be, and what it is capable of.
