“She” is identified in society as nothing but a butterfly in the collective eye: a performance acceptable to the majority, carrying out their every utterance and judgement: go ahead and serve, do this, act this way, wear these clothes.
Despite her willing adjacency to the view of her masters, she has kept her mind open and has carved for herself a space to be, to work. In this interior place, she is able to connect to what is real, to the deeper reserves of her understanding, to the purest sense of her labor, where every thought and material becomes a lashing narrative—a visual voice she can openly express. Women have always contended with the majority for such a space—where they can create on their own and at their own terms: a sanctuary for her creative soul and her search for her own sensibility, stillness, and strength.
Virginia Woolf declares in her essay A Room of One’s Own “Anything may happen when womanhood has ceased to be a protected occupation.” The true nature of women can only ever be unleashed in her own space. Within this second womb, she can align with her natural evolution, unrestrained by the fiction imposed upon her by society. Here, her individuality can unfold, unfettered by the rules and structures of culture.
The women artists presented here enact the same transformation through their materials and techniques. They carefully rear their own process, embracing the nuances of their personal narratives and the distinct embodiments of their faculties. In their own atypical manner, they exhibit the feminine creative soul far from the lore nurtured by culture and reveal an opening between what is real and what is fiction.
