In her recent series of works, Iya Consorio is inspired by a narrative deeply rooted in the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. More commonly known as Kintsugi, this approach mends the areas of breakage with powdered gold linings. Consorio manifests this method through her art effectively, since her new set of paintings resembles a ceramic stone base. The eccentric, mischievous portraits look like shattered glass reflections or some may even perceive it as deep-colored diamond heads. Kintsugi treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. In this vein, Consorio wants to show through her art how she dealt with rejection and faced her fears, and how one should be proud of their imperfections rather than disguise them. This show is very personal for the artist because she has always lived with this ideology and no matter how many times she falls and breaks she will always stand up with a golden fire in her heart. And for her, this state of “golden repair” is distinctively beautiful because once broken and repurposed, you are no longer the same person you once were. You are now special because your scars make you unique, and true perfection is only achievable if you are not afraid of pain and failure.
