Chad Montero

Richard Montero, b. 1988, graduated cum laude from the University of the Philippines Diliman with a degree in Fine Arts and a major in painting.

His works reflect his immersion and fascination with traditional customs such as folk medicine, and long-held cultural beliefs, superstitions, local legends, and myths. He gives them importance in his works, recontextualizing them in a modern world that inevitably is also pushing such ideas to obscurity. He renders them using fine linear strokes that strongly define his imagery as if etching them deeply would secure their permanence in people’s consciousness.

Montero has been a participant in a number of group shows and has received recognition in multiple art awards. He is currently shortlisted for Philippine Art Awards this year. He was a semifinalist in the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence Competition from 2017 to 2018 and the PLD-DPC’s 23rd Visual Arts Competition in 2009. Chad, as he is more commonly called, was one of the first artists to be awarded a grant for the CANVAS Artist in Residence program that was launched in 2017, where he mounted his first solo show in 2019 called “Duman sa Agihan”.
