The exhibition “Tanaw” delves into the multifaceted concept of “views” both as a noun and a verb. The title, derived from the Filipino language, signifies “a view” or “seeing”. It explores the idea that perception does not necessarily equate to comprehension, as our senses are inherently limited, and our capacity for interpretation will always be influenced by previous experiences.
Featuring the works of Christian Culangan and Emard Cañedo, the exhibition showcases their distinct interpretations of “tanaw” in various environments. Culangan’s artistic focus lies in the rural landscapes of upland Cavite. His abstract canvases are alive with dynamic, swirling lines reminiscent of the winding roads found in his locale. Skillfully utilizing the fast-drying qualities of acrylic paint, Culangan effectively conveys the rapidity with which he moves through and experiences the landscape during his cycling journeys.
In contrast, Cañedo’s art is rooted in a suburban neighborhood, where the act of viewing is obstructed or encouraged by windows. Outsiders peer through gaps amidst metal grills, engaging in what could be described as “rubber necking.” Cañedo’s layered works incorporate grid-lines painted on glass, paper, and wood, symbolizing the various barriers people erect within such spaces.
The exhibition prompts contemplation on perception and its relationship with distance and understanding. Distance, whether physical or metaphorical, often leads to misunderstandings due to the limited perspective it offers. However, it can also be a source of comfort, providing time for preparation. Similarly, our ability to project into the future corresponds to our capacity for envisioning and perceiving.
Through the exploration of Culangan and Cañedo’s divergent perspectives, “Tanaw” encourages viewers to reflect on the complexities of perception, the influence of environment, and the ways in which distance both hinders and aids comprehension.
