Agila: Mutant Vehicle Design Competition

Preserving Jeepney Culture
Jeepneys are the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines. They are known for their crowded seating and kitsch decorations, which have become a ubiquitous symbol of Philippine culture and art.

Jeepneys represent the multi-cultural history of the Philippines. You can see the Spanish influence through the vivid colors, and fiesta-like feeling. There is a little of the United States because it evolved from the imported Jeep. There is Japan because of the Japanese engine. But it was all built by Filipino hands.

Jeepney are special because no two are the same. Decked out in bright colors and decorated to the driver’s personal taste. Jeepney art is impressive and its a combination of locally applied artwork by hand, airbursh and decals.

Currently, Jeepney culture is dying out due to raising fuel costs. Drivers are spending half their day’s wage on fuel alone. We can help the culture from dying if we can convert engines to biofuel. This costs more upfront for conversion to biodiesel but saves a lot of money in the long run. In efforts to educate and reduce our carbon footprint, the engine will be converted to biodiesel and recycled fry oil will be used for fuel.

The Build and Transportation

The Jeepney will 100% be transformed into a Philippine Eagle Art Car in the Philippines by the hands of Filipino craftsmen and artisans and all of the materials will be sourced locally. Once the build is complete, the Jeepney will make its way over to the States just in time for Burning Man 2016

Saving the Philippine Eagle

Not many people are aware of the Philippine Eagle, a rare bird which is considered to be the most powerful bird in the world. There are less than a thousand birds left in the Philippines due to deforestation, hunting, and pesticides.

The Jeepney will be transformed into a Philippine Eagle in hopes to educate people about these majestic birds.
