The symbolisms in the works for “Blood Ties” bear an intensity necessary to express, aptly and directly, a particular emotive atmosphere. The artists, Ramona Dela Cruz – Gaston and Doktor Karayom, chose to respond to life’s events that are current to them individually. While at times the artists feel that the subject matters conveyed are simply personal, both have come to realize the works employ to universal ideas of dealing with relationships, being an individual, as a woman or man, as a person, as part of a community.
The collaborative pieces for “Blood Ties” connect both artists expertise in visual symbolism with the overtone study of individual opinions and unique experiences, all of which exposes itself through a strong crimson color palette.
The artists have successfully incorporated their independent views into a cohesive and compelling exhibit making the viewers witness love, dreams, fantasies as well as subconscious and social commentaries through their visual narrative. For Ramona, this is her attempt to understand and define aspects of human relationships; for Doktor Karayom, this is his definition of fundamental desire of the human condition – the longing of an individual to connect with the “other”. “Blood Ties” maps out the dynamics of human interaction and the enduring dependence to one another.
