STANDBY APRIL! presents BRUJAS

Featuring:

Jzar Tabilin, Mark Dalacat, Cy Zinampan, Ekis Gimenez, and Opaline Santos

Text and direction by Carlo Paulo Pacolor

Somewhat based on Isabelo de los Reyes’s “Ang Diablo sa Filipinas (ayon sa nasasabi sa mga casulatan luma sa Kastila)”, BRUJAS is a romp through space and time, through brutal histories and painful exigencies, all toiling and troubling from the voices of four brujas and mangcuculam. Tapar, a shape-shifter albularyo; Fulangan, a demonyo, and two young witch lovers India and Sabino who through many wicked nights hatch a plan to end a war that’s been raging since kopong-kopong. Good girls go to heaven — and well witches braid each other’s hairs with flowers and raise Hell.

The brujas are on the run this Standby April! And we’re going from museum to museum, gallery to gallery, invoking the darkest magicks eklavoo to fight off something more cruel, more sinister, more foul-mouthed than a sulfur-breathing three horned beast, pisting yawa!

We move into a space, adapt without moving the pre-existing layout of the place, sometimes around or along the works present, within and without the limits and bounderies set by the museum/gallery that has decided to let us in. We do this for one night only in each given space, for no more than two hours, and then disappear afterwards to move on to the next. What this gives us, the performers is a chance to physically revise our performance, spontaneously react to each new space, and unravel at every step without knowing what will happen next. What this gives you, the audience, in that given specific date and specific location is a unique experience that can never be repeated in another time or space. Like that movement in the corner of your eye or a chilling spectre.

So bring pitchforks and torches and catch us if you can!

Kitakits and blessed be!
