“Collage is the twentieth century’s greatest innovation.”
— Robert Motherwell
The collage emerged as a medium in its own right in the early years of the 20th century through the Cubist experiments of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Its cutting-edge evolution started when Picasso and Braque used the term “collage” (from the French verb “coller,” meaning “to glue” or “to stick”) to describe works featuring layered images and those incorporating pasted pieces of colored paper, newsprint, and fabric; at that time, this art form was considered an audacious intermingling of high and low culture. It revolutionized modern art.
As more and more modern artists began exploring the practice, collages became more varied and increasingly experimental, both formally and conceptually. Many artists used collage techniques as a means of addressing topics like race, class, and politics.
Art Show Philippines presents “Cut and Paste: The Collage Exhibition”, a collection of collage artworks by 44 Filipino artists.
