Design Thinking: A Human-Centered Approach to Problem Solving

Anybody can unlock their creative potential through Design Thinking. Design Thinking empowers one to leverage one’s creative abilities with a systemic approach to innovation in the workplace. No matter what one’s career is, Design Thinking enables practical tools needed for someone to become an innovative thinker. This workshop will introduce the participant to some of the tools and strategies that will enable a creative and human-centered approach to solving problems at work, at home and in the community.

Interaction Design: Prototyping Web and Mobile Applications

Prototyping is the stage of the design process where ideas come to life. Building prototypes is a low-cost and risk-averse way to make ideas tangible, learn while building and iterate rapidly. In this workshop, participants will learn methods to quickly build prototypes to create a tangible representation of your ideas that you can share and learn from.

Robyn Heaton, MEd

As Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Media and Design at Algonquin College, Robyn leads a team of academic administrators responsible for five departments within the faculty. The Faculty of Arts, Media and Design is unique in that it consists of the School of Media and Design, General Arts and Science, Academic Access Centre, the Experienced Worker Centre and Academic Partnerships. Robyn is an expert in Post-secondary Education and Leadership, Creative Thinking, Design Thinking, Strategic Planning, Communications, Consumer Insight, and Qualitative Research.

The School of Media and Design caters to those individuals who are seeking a creative career path. These programs include design, media communications and entertainment. Within the Faculty, Academic Upgrading and General Arts and Science provide necessary pathways for students who are embarking on their academic journey whether directly from high school or as a non-traditional student. Prior to assuming her current role, Robyn was the Academic Chair of Media Studies for four years and prior to that spent 18 years as professor and coordinator of the Advertising program in the School of Media and Design. Before joining Algonquin College in 1992, she spent 12 years in the design, media and communications industries including animation, graphic design, advertising and public relations. Robyn completed a MEd in Educational Studies – Leadership and Educational Improvement at the University of Alberta in spring 2014. This degree is designed for managers and directors in educational settings who wish to enhance their professional knowledge and improve their educational practice. Robyn’s area of research was the role of innovation and creativity in the change process. She also holds diplomas in Creative Advertising and Fashion Design.

Megan Wilson

Megan Wilson is an educator, front-end developer and interdisciplinary media artist. Megan’s research/interest areas include industry-based, human-centered design practice; collaborative methodologies; information visualization; the role of digital technology in disrupting practices of documentation, the transfer of knowledge and production; the effects of new technology on cinematic expressions; design history and practice; and the correspondence between digital work and traditional craft. Megan taught at Emily Carr University and Simon Fraser University before moving to the beautiful Comox Valley where she is currently the program coordinator of the Interactive Media programs at North Island College.

 

Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) University or OCADU

A public university located in Toronto, OCADU is known as Canada’s largest and oldest education institution for art and design, which offers courses through the faculties of art, design, liberal arts and sciences and alternative programs.

Jennie Suddick

Jennie is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Toronto, Canada. She has exhibited throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Influenced by the ethos of her printmaking background, her work explores the seeking of a personal bond to places, images or objects that are shared, repeated, and accessible, despite often being artificially manufactured or reproduced. She focuses on acknowledging the imprint these entities leave on individuals (or vise-versa), even when they are far-removed from their original context. This includes, but is not limited to, symbols and artistic themes used across cultures.

Her role as an educator has also branched out into both her personal and collaborative practices, as the co-founder of Crazy Dames, which integrates engagement, education and artmaking. Jennie earned her Masters of Fine Arts from York University and holds both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Advanced Visual Studies Certificate from OCAD University (OCAD U). She is currently Manager, International Projects & Partnerships at OCAD U, and recently held positions as an Assistant Professor at OCAD U and a Lecturer at Ryerson University in the School of Creative Industries. She was the recipient of the OCAD U 2017 Non-Tenured Teaching Award and served as the Associate Chair of Contemporary Painting and Print Media from 2014-2017. During this period, she developed the Faculty of Art’s course ‘Professional Practice’, a core required class for students of all majors.

Immony Men

Immony is an artist, educator, and community-based researcher. He is an assistant professor in the Digital Futures program at OCAD University and the co-director of the Public Visualization Lab. He has completed an MFA in Visual Arts at the University of Windsor. He has also completed an MA in Communications and New Media at McMaster University. As an artist he has exhibited nationally and internationally and has been awarded municipal, provincial, and federal arts council grants to support his work. Men’s practice take the form of interactive installations, interdisciplinary performances, social artworks, and community-based research projects. He also shares a social art practice with his collaborator Maegan Broadhurst. Collaborative artworks include Shadows!, Cite, Chthulucene, Everything in Place, Can you hear the city whispering?, Last Night at the Chestnut, Home on Gerrard Street, From the Mouth of the River and Our City Centre Skatepark. Solo exhibitions include Taking Care of Business (National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec, Khyber ICA, Artspace, Grunt Gallery, Gallery 44, Gallery 101), Effections: “We need to Talk” (Videographe, Connexion Gallery, Beaverbrooke, Harcourt House, Arnica, A Space, and Centre3), and Khnhom mok muoy kaun techtuoch.
