SUPERSTITION. It stems from the inherent fear of the unknown, where we attempt to rationalize what is currently beyond our own understanding.

Among the myriad of these ridiculous beliefs is the subject of cats — particularly when one comes across a black cat, they are bound to receive BAD LUCK.

This absurd superstition comes from the Medieval concept of associating them with witchcraft and the God of Death, making black cats less likely to be wanted than their colorful counterparts.

Yet, disregarding the mystical enigma surrounding our furry friends, some cultures still consider them to bring the opposite: GOOD LUCK and PROSPERITY.

With BLACK CATS at the fore, FORTUNATE MISFORTUNES expresses the two sides of FORTUNE and MISFORTUNE — the contrasting imagery between the impression of cats and the superstitions surrounding them.

Portrayed through a series of different styles from various artists and the play between blacks and bright alluring colors, ‘Fortunate Misfortunes’ aims to shed light on the void; proving that the misfortunes in life are not brought upon by comical symbols or ridiculous superstitions.

Rather, it is brought upon how you set out to live your life.
