Fostering the Grassroots thru Science, Technology and Innovation
Local challenges and opportunities vary from one community to another thus it is necessary to generate niche-adapted solutions capitalized on the local knowledge and resources. These solutions, dubbed as Grassroots Innovation, are innovative products, process or technology created by people from the countryside, usually due to necessity or challenges.
Grassroots Innovation (GI) is still not well recognized and supported at the national level which calls for its grand scaling thus the proposed Grassroots Innovation Program in the Philippines. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region XI, the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI) and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), will be launching the Grassroots Innovation for Inclusive Development Program and Forum on July 20, 2019 at the Hotel Jen Manila by Shangri-la, Pasay City.
International and renowned speakers from India and Malaysia will share their success stories on GI and will tackle the following three topics for discussion: What is GIs and the nexus between GIs and inclusive development?; Models of GIs in India and Malaysia; and the Proposed Grassroots Innovation Program in the Philippines.
This aims to create awareness on the relevance of GIs and strengthen the network of advocates/ experts in the Philippines and in Asia supporting the GRIND Framework. This initiative incorporates the participation of the government, civil society organization, academe and industry sector (a quadruple-helix collaboration model)
GRIND Program further provides opportunities to stimulate overall growth of the country by utilizing community-led solutions geared towards sustainable development. The DOST is taking the lead towards fostering an innovation culture starting in the communities.
