Art for a Cause
For its third exhibit installment, Loose Marbles — an art group established by young visual artists Marinela Poso and Maricel Poso-Salvador, reaches out to the children of Tondo in an art-cum-fundraising exhibit titled “Innocentia”. In cooperation with Project PEARLS and Helping Land Tondo, the exhibit explores the idea of innocence according to each individual’s perceptions as opposed to the dictates of society.
Opening on September 26 at 6PM in Sigwada Dos Gallery, “Innocentia” lets you ponder: “Is innocence a powerful armor of protection or a weakness that leaves one vulnerable and artless?” The art and fundraising event aims to provide the children of Helping Land Tondo with teaching and school supplies through the help of Project PEARLS. Part of the exhibit proceeds will be donated to Project PEARL’s After School Program. Prior to the event, Loose Marbles will conduct a four-week art workshop in Helping Land Tondo. It will be culminated with a poster-making competition among the children, where two artworks will be selected to be part of the exhibit.
In true Loose Marbles fashion, there will be performance arts, film screening, spoken word poetry, and live band performances during the opening night. What’s more, free food and drinks will be served, and entrance is free! All you need to do is bring art materials and school supplies to be donated to Project PEARLS. In addition, Loose Marbles hopes to spread the word about Project PEARLS’ endeavors and encourage more volunteers to take part in their fun and rewarding programs.
Loose Marbles produces independent and intimate art shows, providing a venue for visual artists, performance artists, poets, filmmakers, and independent bands. They collaborate with independent galleries and NGO’s for events as a way of giving back to the industry and the community.
Project PEARLS is a growing institution that aims to reach out to more children who need quality care, especially after school. Helping Land in Tondo is one of the communities that Project PEARLS serves. It is home to hundreds of families living in extreme poverty, and the community sits on an active dumpsite where production of “pagpag” (leftover food scavenged from garbage and processed, cooked, and sold to other poor people) is the main source of livelihood.
“Innocentia” will run until October 10, 2015. Sigwada Dos Gallery is located in 2212 Nakar St., Manila. For more information, call: Marinela Poso at 09175858993.
