ACKEE & SALTFISH
Japanese Identical Twin Reggae Deejay Duo.
They were born AKIHIRO (Left) and HIROYUKI (Right). Jamaicans started calling AKIHIRO “AKI” for short, with the name being hard to pronounce, Jamaicans changed it to “ACKEE” And dubbed his twin brother “SALTFISH”. Thus the names “ACKEE & SALTFISH” were born.
In 1989, Johnny P performed with the Digital New York band in their town in Japan and piqued their interest in reggae music. They decided to go to America in 1990 to meet Noel Alphonso of the Digital New York band and stayed in Morgan Heritage’s studio a friend of Noel Alphonso whilst learning to deejay. Major Mackerel was the one who taught them how to deejay and gave them tips on writing their first song “Jamaican Gal Pickney”. They then decided to visit Jamaica and perform their song. In Jamaica, they were assisted by Noel Alphonso’s father ‘Roland Alphonso’, Skatalite’s saxophone player, who offered them a place to stay in Waltham Park in Kingston. They toured Jamaica in 1991 with Singing Melody performing their first song and getting to know the culture. They then got their own place and moved to Maxfield Avenue to a house owned by the organizer of Japan Splash. They fell in love with the Jamaican Culture so much they didn’t realize they had passed the limit for their stay and the Jamaican national dish was deported back to Japan by the Jamaican government.
After leaving Jamaica they went back to the United States where they performed in New York, Connecticut, Miami, New Jersey and Cleveland. Finally they returned to Japan in 1995 after being out of their home country for five (5) years pursuing Reggae music. They started touring Japan with their unique form of music and released their first (1st) album in 1996 “Nah Tek Back”, produced by King Jammys. Ackee and Saltfish returned to Jamaica multiple times within the next few years releasing two more albums, in 1997 “Bush Out”, and in 1998 “Watch Nutt’n”. In 2003 they released their fourth (4th) album “Stilla Struggle”.
Their love for Jamaica brought them back in 2005 to perform at East Fest in St. Thomas and also the Bob Marley Fest in Trench Town. They returned to Japan afterwards to prepare for December 2006 where they would be a force to reckon with at the annual staging of Sting, one of Jamaica’s premiere Reggae shows. They released a collaboration album in 2007 titled “Bredren” that featured Major Mackerel, Buju Banton, Morgan Heritage, Singing Melody, Chuck Fenda, Johnny P and Foxy Brown. They then released their 5th album in 2010 titled “Saisakoku Ron” which means “Re-isolation”. Their last album to date with the best of Ackee & Saltfish released in 2011 is titled “The Orenta Best”.
Again they made their way to Jamaica in 2014 to perform at Rebel Salute in support of Queen Ifrica. Following that show, they performed at Ninjaman’s Birthday Bash in St. Ann, ‘Football N Style’ at Paul Bogle high school in St. Thomas, West Kingston Jamboree, Sting, Stone Love Anniversary And More (See attachment).
Also they recorded “FORWARD WI AGUH” Original Channel One Riddim named “APARTMENT RIDDIM” who released JAH9’s “STEAMERS A BUBBLE”, “GO THRU ” on the monster riddim “TAXI ” at the Sly And Robby production, “INNA DI PARTY” with Major Mackerel with Jamaican young producer Digital Sham’s label Digitalize Records (Now Available on iTunes store) and more.
Ackee and Saltfish will be coming to country near you soon!!
