Back in 2005, OPM (Original Philippine Music) had ruled the airwaves. With so much recognisable talent, Kala had penetrated the scene with the resurgence of a sound that is distinctively pinoy … ‘Manila Sound’ . Their 1st album under Sony BMG entitled Manila High had hits such as Jeepney, Parapap, Manila High and Pulis Pangkalawakan. Each song had a strong impact that garnered the band a huge fan base of listeners. Viva Records even released a Manila Sound Tribute album which gave the band another hit single from its remake of VST’s “Rock Baby Rock”. Across several mediums, all songs were well promoted and widely accepted which helped the band receive several distinctions such as MYX’s Favourite New Artist back in 2007, a spot on MTV as its Rising Artist, an ASEAN IKON competition finalist, AWIT AWARDS such as ‘Best Performance by a New Group Recording Artist’ , ‘Best World/Alternative’,’People’s Choice Favourite New Group’ , ‘People’s Choice Favourite Group’ and Brand Endorsements from Penshoppe, Yehey.com, E-Performax Contact Centers, Taters and Happy Days.
As listeners expanded into wider variety of genres across the globe, the band decided to rediscover themselves by finding a globally accepted sound that is still truly Pinoy. The journey began by rearranging the band line up. Synth player and back up vocalist, Brian Tanchanco, steps up with his edgy vocals while playing on his eccentric Keytar instrument. Raymond Daylo, the drummer, further exemplifies his multi tasking abilities by now taking on the back up vocals. The second half of the journey came from an infusion of global talents. Voopee Elvina, a seasoned musician from Japan, was recruited to be the funky axeman of the group. Jade Justine [youtube.com/JadeJustineTowse], a top rated youtube musician from the UK (England), now provides the thumpy bass groove for Kala.
