Alliance Française de Manille is pleased to present its first exhibition by artist Jill Paz, the 2019 recipient of the Philippine Art Residency Program (PARP). Jill stayed in France for 6 weeks at Centre lntermondes in La Rochelle, where she also had an exhibition at the end of her residency.

About the exhibition
The images of Paz’ installation, La Vue de deux Horizons, was first shown in the gallery of Centre lntermondes, La Rochelle, France during her residency program. Paz’ initial aim was to explore, through research and photography, the 17th century French military fortifications of Vauban, an architectural site that represents an extreme compression of time and detail, Paz developed a travelogue around her research, to explore how the modifications and changes to things over time are manifested and how it has functioned as an aid to collective memory.
For this exhibition, a selection of the images from La Vue de deux Horizons will be hung alongside the artist’s recent work. Paz utilizes digital techniques and printing technology to create one-of-a-kind images that are burned on the surface of Arches watercolor paper. The geographies and histories that Paz was researching in La Rochelle is not only a reflection of her residency, but an exploration of how an image is a complex relationship between artist and subject, nature and technology, and the personal and social.
About the artist
Jill Paz (b. 1982) lives and works in Manila, Philippines. She emigrated in the early eighties to North America, and after completing her studies (BFA and MFA), she returned to Manila to reconnect to her ancestral homeland. Paz has exhibited in the Columbus Museum of Art, USA, Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum, in Slovakia and Mori Art Museum, Japan. In 2019, her installation ‘Grove of Trees’ was featured at Art Basel Hong Kong’s Discovery Sector. She recently exhibited at the Vienna Contemporary with unttld contemporary, Asia Now in Paris with La Patinoire Royale-Galerie Valerie Bach, and this month, her work will be featured at ALT Philippines 2020 with 1335MABINI.
