Xander Calceta’s works for “Life, Still” are concerned with contemporary composition. Within the canvas, the objects function primarily as elements of varying color, texture, and value. Calceta is intrigued by the subjects for their form and accompanying symbolic potential and personal significance. The collection of objects is kept in a shifting tableau that generates a dialogue between the artist, the objects, and the canvas. Each artwork is intended to operate independently but can also be understood as part of a larger and open-ended whole.
