Art Underground Manila is pleased to present New Monochromes by Rafaelle Louise. This is her third solo exhibition at the gallery.

In this show, the artist’s move towards painting remains consistent. Rafaelle describes her work as ‘modern interplay between action painting and minimalism, where the end product stands somewhere between painting and sculpture’.

Rafaelle’s elegant compositions of liberal pastose marks, and creamy, melting paste on smoothened wood blocks form a meticulously built texture. Metallic paints are then projected onto these smooth and rough landscapes, accentuating raised surfaces, fissures, and plains, channeling the physical experience of the material. Here, she particularly worked in monochrome to deepen her focus on light, form and space. Each unique work, while abstract on one level, alludes to art history, reflections on contemporary culture, and mythology.

Rafaelle Louise (b.1990, Quezon City, Philippines) currently lives and works in Quezon City, Philippines. Local and international exhibitions include: The King’s Garden, Light & Space Contemporary, Manila, (2014), Ornamental Burnout, 182 Artspace, Tainan (Taiwan, 2016), Archipelago (first solo exhibition) , Art Underground, Manila (2018), and Reservoir (second solo exhibition), Art Underground, Manila (2019).
