MANILA, Philippines – The Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino announced the nominees for the 38th Gawad Urian awards.
Present during the announcement on Wednesday are Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino President Grace J. Alfonso, and its members Bienvenido Lumbera, Tito Valiente, Mario Hernando, and Cinema One head Ronald Arguelles.
Aside from the winners, Arguelles said the viewers should also expect the “tribute for Natatanging Gawad Urian awardee na si Nora Aunor. Of course, para sa 100 years na celebration para kay late Director Lamberto Avellana, may gagawin din po kaming tribute para sa kanya.”
Lumbera also emphasized that this year, majority of the nominees are mainstream actors and actresses.
Valiente even recalled the instance where Ai Ai delas Alas joked about hoping to be nominated in the award-giving body, which actually happened this year.
“Kung nanood kayo ng Gawad Urian last year, nagsalita siya na sana ma-nominate siya, without thinking na may ginagawa pala siyang indie. Nagkatotoo ang kanyang wish last year,” he said. The comedienne is nominated for best actress for the film “Ronda.”
Natatanging Gawad Urian Awardee
Meanwhile, the Manunuri was asked why they have chosen Nora Aunor to be awarded with the Natatanging Gawad Urian Award, compared to her rival Vilma Santos who was said to have received more awards from the award-giving body.
Although he’s not speaking on behalf of the organization, Valiente said on his point of view Nora has met the factors they consider in choosing the recipient.
“Sa akin lang, this is not the Manunuri’s opinion, sa akin lang is si Nora kasi ang kauna-unahang best actress ng Manunuri [for the film] ‘Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos.’ And kapag tinitignan mo ang diskurso sa social media, laging sinasabi ‘yon,” he explained.
“In fact in a certain point, may nagsasabi nga na Manunuri made Nora and Nora made Manunuri. Although exaggeration, may gano’n paniniwala.”
He also added that “I have a feeling, in politics also – personal din ito – maganda ang politika ni Nora Aunor. Kahit hindi magkatugma ang idelohiya ni Nora sa Manunuri in general sense, may factor si Nora na nasa Manunuri rin ‘yong daring, pagiging palaban and pagiging independent.”
