Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Manila, Philippines
The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) through its Cultural Exchange Department (CED) presents three prominent Visayan Performing groups in “PAGSAULOG: A Celebration of Visayan Culture” on July 25 at 3:00pm and 7:00pm at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater) under the CED‘s Ugnayan sa Sining program.
The featured groups include the University of Visayas Chorale of Cebu City, Kabataang Silay Rondalla of Silay City, and Artes Bailes of the Iloilo National High School. The creative team is also led by Anna Abeleda Piquero (choirmaster), Jegger Anjao (rondalla music director), and Ria Espanola, Dance Director of Artes Bailes.
With concept and direction by Tanya Lopez, Pagsaulog is an articulation of the Visayan culture through dance, and music which are the core of every Filipino traditional celebration known as fiesta (Spanish word for festivity). It is a religious and cultural celebration where members of the community converge for thanksgiving in honor of a patron saint for intercession or for a good harvest. Celebrated all over the country throughout the year, the fiesta has become a haven for artistic expression both in contemporary, traditional and indigenous arts, dances and music that signify the community’s values, traditions and culture. The presentation is a journey of re-connection and rediscovery of the cultural roots, and the renewal of the identity of the Visayan people as Filipinos.
After the CCP run, Pagsaulog moves to Marinduque in Boac from July 26-29, 2019. The move-over engagement is part of the Kaisa sa Sining (KSS) partnership recently forged by the CCP and the Marinduque State College. The CCP run and move-over in Marinduque are presented in partnership with the Performance Laboratory Inc. and the Negros Cultural Foundation.
The 2019 Ugnayan sa Sining performances @ the CCP are offerings of the center as part of its 50th Anniversary and the 40th Year of its Outreach Program and are intended for the students & local communities who have limited or no access/means to experience live cultural engagements at the CCP.
From 2014-2017, the CCP CED under its program entitled “Ugnayan sa Sining” successfully mounted and toured four collaborative productions which highlighted the cultural expressions and traditions of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. For 2019, the productions will be presented at the CCP Little Theater starting February to October. The Mindanao collaborative production opened the series last February and the Visayan performing groups are the second featured regional artists.
