A suite of 50 watercolor paintings is the first solo exhibit of Paulu Mathay Bruselas entitled “I CAN’T GIVE YOU ANYTHING BUT LOVE”. Heavily influenced by Paulu’s interest and education in film and literature, these paintings are story-telling screen caps of the artist’s travels, friendships, personal items, imaginings and the places he occupies. As the first exhibit for the pandemic-delayed opening of a new branch of vMeme Contemporary Art Gallery at 3/F Estancia Mall East Wing, Capitol Commons Pasig, the show opens on September 11, 2022 (Sunday) at 3:00 in the afternoon.
For Paulu Mathay Bruselas and his art, each painting is a vignette of love experienced in a specific moment with all the richness of stories, emotions, memories, and all else within its micro-narrative. The word ‘love’ is not used loosely in this exhibit and the artworks themselves explain why and how. Love may also be used to describe Paulu’s fascination and dedication to use watercolor as his primary medium in painting. His color palette, the mix of techniques and layers, the play on opacity and transparency, are all expressions of adoration to watercolor as a medium for contemporary artistic permutations. Versatility is experienced in the variety of subject matter and ever-varying mood of each painting Paulu renders.
“For our team, this exhibit symbolizes our re-instilled appreciation for micro moments of joy, victory, excitement and love. We wanted a show that will connect to the audience through a universal yet personal experience of being able to travel, to meet people, to take in each moment with absolute presence and just be receptive of what each moment can give. Paulu’s body of work found us at a time we are approaching a post-pandemic future and asking what matters most. We are sure this painting collection will also connect to you, no matter where you are, in forming an understanding and appreciation of what it is to be alive.”, shares vMeme’s head curator Avie Felix.
I CAN’T GIVE YOU ANYTHING BUT LOVE is on view at vMeme-Estancia until October 5 and moves to vMeme-UP Town Center branch from October 8 to 30, 2022.
