DAKILA – Philippine Collective for Modern Heroism in partnership with the Embassy of Canada and the Film Development Council of the Philippines, cordially invites you to the Philippine Premiere of “Mga Anak ng Unos (Storm Children)” by Lav Diaz on November 4, 2014 at 7:00 P.M. at Cinema 6 of Ayala Trinoma Mall in Quezon City.

The Philippines is visited by an average of 20 to 28 strong typhoons and storms every year. It is the most storm-battered country in the world.

As changing weather patterns bring about strong typhoons like Yolanda, climate change has become an issue of human survival. “Mga Anak ng Unos (Storm Children)” tackles how children deal with devastations after the storm. The compelling photography of world-renowned filmmaker Lav Diaz beautifully weaves the story of three children and how they cope with disasters.

The Philippine premiere of “Mga Anak ng Unos (Storm Children)” coincides with the anniversary week of the landfall of Typhon Yolanda (Haiyan) in Tacloban and the culmination of the Climate Walk for Climate Justice, a 1,000 kilometer and 40 day journey from Kilometer 0 Luneta to Ground Zero Tacloban, participated by DAKILA’s core members Nityalila Saulo, AG Sano, Charley Sta. Maria, Christine Orias and Steph Tan and led by Philippine chief negotiator and representative to the UN Climate negotiations, Commissioner Yeb Sano of the Climate Change Commission. This special screening is for the benefit of DAKILA’s climate revolution campaign and the trust fund of the children featured in the film.

Tickets are priced at PhP 250.00 each. Limited seats are available and reservation is required.

[Synopsis from the Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival]

Lav Diaz is on of the most radical and visionary filmmakers of our time. His brand new film – following Locarno winner ‘From What Is Before’ – is a documentary, but one in a league of its own. And while his films easily run from between six and eleven hours, this one ticks in just on the other side of two!

A storm has left a city on the coast in a state of post-apocalyptic chaos. Freight ships were thrown from the sea and lie around between the remains of houses and shacks, and countless people lost to the waves. In the middle of it all a horde of children are creating a new world for themselves. There has always been a strong impulse towards non-fiction in Diaz’s comprehensive oeuvre. But in the new and almost dialogue-free ‘Storm Children – Book One’, one of the most uncompromising filmmakers has gone ‘all in’.

The fact that his characteristic, cinematic signature – the long and hypnotic scenes held in patiently observing black and white images – is present in every composition and every instant, underlines the urgency of his vision and its importance in international cinema over the past decade. A sublime, cinematic report from a devastating corner of a brutal reality.
