Pineapple Lab presents Rising Odds, the first solo exhibition featuring the works of muralist Jappy Agoncillo. With Rising Odds, Jappy celebrates the archetypal Hero’s Journey through the graphic magnetism, immediacy, and expansiveness of his mural-work.

“In the cave you fear to enter lies the treasure that you seek” says Joseph Campbell, the man behind popular discourse on The Hero’s Journey, the name of a narrative structure that has appeared in stories constantly over a vast period of time and in a great number of cultures. Appearing in ancient myths like Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and in modern films like Spiderman, Lord of The Rings, and Star Wars, it tells the story of a hero that receives a call to adventure, crosses over to the unknown, faces their fears, defeats the challenge, attains something new, and comes home.

In this series, Jappy celebrates these heroes at their eleventh hour, the pinnacle of their struggles. It is a meaningful yet playful glimpse at the pressures that create the strongest of people. Jappy wants to explore the vulnerability and humanity in these heroes through their struggles, not just the victories at the end. It is this grace and one’s ability to face the rising odds with unreckoned resilience and tenacity is what brings out the hero in anyone— creating a timeless narrative that connects and inspires its audience.
