A dance project directed and choreographed by Ani ng Dangal awardee Olivia Bugayong will be performed on November 23 and 24, Friday and Saturday, 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., at the SDA Black Box, 6th floor School of Design and Arts, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.
Through personal interviews and dance vignettes, “sa•yaw” looks at dance from the lens of ordinary people as it explores the rawness of people’s everyday movements as a form of expression, providing a fresh perspective on the art of dance choreography. The production’s music is provided by Jarrett Pinto and the narrative is written by Marya Dela Torre.
Each movement becomes a dance step and makes a story. These movements will eventually contribute largely to an individual’s spirituality most especially in their chosen path. The dance project also aims to promote professionalism through the different qualities and behaviors that the performers practice throughout the entire production. Most importantly, “sa•yaw” will have the audience members rethink their actions, for all their actions have meaning.
Bugayong, who is taking up Bachelor of Performing Arts Major in Dance at DLS-CSB, started dancing at the age of three and trained under the supervision of Vella Damian, ACBF for ballet, and Christine Crame for modern dance. For five years, she received the highest grade with gold medal, also known as the Distinction Award, from the Australian Conservatoire of Ballet. She is currently a company member of the Saint Benilde Romançon Dance Company.
The 20-year-old ballerina has won in local and international competitions such as the Philippine Dance Cup 2016, Hong Kong Challenge Cup Dance Competition, and Malaysian International Ballet Grand Prix. The National Commission for Culture and Arts awarded her the Ani ng Dangal trophy for “excellence in the field of performing arts and giving pride to the country.”
“sa•yaw” will also feature two-time HKCCDC gold medalists Michael “Kul” Dela Torre and Mark Aldrich Juelar, HKCCDC 2016 best performance winner Neil Casagan, and SBRDC senior member Jay Anthony “Tonjie” Mangao.
