This July, we open Something Comforting, a group exhibition that explores the many, personal ways that we find solace.
Jeffrey Jay Jarin’s new series titled Daydreaming is a result of the artist’s frequent reverie when he’s out for a walk, thoughts adrift and blissfully unaware of the noise of the world. Curiosity of this frequent state led him to discover that daydreaming can be two things at once: simple-minded checklists and future scenarios. “I understood (daydreaming) on a deeper level and made me realize that it is a rehearsal mechanism; those daydreams are priming me for something in the future,” Jarin says.
His new series reflects exactly this, a merging of the present and the future, daydreams as premonitions for better days ahead. A plant through windows or against concrete spaces is the artist’s juxtaposition of an unfulfilling, dull reality against hope, springing green and eternal.
JJ Jarin has recently been chosen to be a part of London-based art gallery Delphian Gallery’s 2021 Artist Open Call. He has been joining exhibitions all over Metro Manila since 2014 and has been featured in various art prominent publications. He uses plants and architectural spaces to show the relationship of man and the stories that are borne from these spaces.
BITTO unveils his new series called Begone, a word play on the plant Begonia, in this group exhibition. The series was a result of the artist’s conversation with the Philippine Taxonomic Initiative, specifically on new Begonia species that were discovered in 2020 but are already endangered. Begone confronts us with the facts of the Begonia’s fading presence and is a call for preservation and action. BITTO started as a muralist but since then has had several exhibitions, including being showcased at Art Fair Philippines.
Pinagalitan Ako, Bakit Ko Daw Pinatungan Yung Painting Sa Sala is quintessential Chalk Zaldivar: funny and irreverent, with his trademark plastered smiley. His painting is literally what the title says it is, which is a testament to Chalk’s relaxed approach to art but also a continuing commentary of how we as a people smile through the abuse and pain. Because it’s just easier that way.
