Richard Tuason challenges perception in his show “Temporary Art”.
Media bombards us with symbols and icons, that we see in movies and/or mainstream media, resulting in viewers becoming inadvertently distracted from its original meanings. The idea of mixing and remixing imagery allows the artist to explore how people give meanings to the outputs presented by the artist, ultimately challenging the viewers’ subconscious inclinations and prejudices in the process.
It is the constant presence of these icons which have been remixed on social media and other similar platforms that allows Tuason to seamlessly fuse images, regardless of their respective institutions or movements they represent. In a similar fashion, the artist presents us with a hodgepodge of imagery and symbolisms aiming to challenge people’s notions of what makes for a meaningful work of art. For “Temporary Art” Tuason creates works that, when looked at in the gallery space, become an invitation for personal interpretations.
Instead of using his art to explicitly communicate a message, Tuason uses his work as a tool for social experimentation. Hoping to gauge if his work posits how individuals value art, through the meanings it communicates or through the meanings that can be inferred from them.
“Temporary Art” is Richard Tuason’s 2nd solo exhibition. The opening reception will be at Art Underground on May 26, Saturday at 6pm. For more information contact at (02) 721 0745 or (0917) 523 7463. Email artundergroundmanila@gmail.com
