THE ABUNDANT SELF
Drawing freely from a theme of personifying their inspirations and muses, seven Ilocos-based contemporary artists celebrate the creative sources in a group exhibit titled, The Abundant Self, The show will be at Art Galileia, from September 6 to 18, 2014 and features the works of Richard Quebral, Jay Hidalgo, Brave Singh, Pablo Zingapan, Roel Salvatierra, Ferdinand Riotoc and RV Rivera.
The Abundant Self is an exhibition that edifies the function of inspiration in the formation of personal aesthetics. While it has gained currency especially in Romantic art in the 18th century, art as inspired acts (often in reference to muses) have been eclipsed by criticality since the mid-20th century. The artists in the show, having been raised in Vigan and in the ethos of nostalgic sentiment, have chosen to mine the affective dimensions of their selves framed in this erstwhile quaint aesthetics to foreground its potency and vigor in today’s art practice. But these artists, through their works, discard the saccharine (and inauthentic) almost always associated with inspired art and expose a whole range of emotions and situations – often laden with subtleties of fear and longing – hence, presenting the abundance of the self as source for creative ideas and projects.
