The Guild tackles sensitive freelancer issues, legal remedies in series of talks

Ana is a freelance writer who has experienced distress over her client’s unpaid fees. She has called the client many times to follow up, but she keeps getting the same response: “We are still processing your check.” More than three months have passed, still no check. Ana is confused about what to do next–she only has a receivable of Php 20,000 so that means it’s not practical to file a case for that measly amount.

Rob, a freelance graphic designer, is about to close a deal with a big corporate client. He needs to sign the contract to formalize the agreement, but upon reviewing it, he feels that some provisions are one-sided. It is the company’s standard contract, however, and he isn’t sure if he has the right, or if it will be in his best interests to ask the client to have some parts rewritten.

One day, Julie was playing with Google Search and discovered, to her surprise and disappointment, that a reputable regional newspaper has reprinted an article that she has published, without proper attribution. Should she call the editor and demand that her article be taken down? Should she ask for a printed apology? Should she demand for payment and fees for damages?

These are just some examples of the countless issues that could affect freelance workers, contractual employees, and self-employed individuals as far as Intellectual Property, Small Claims Courts, and Contracts are concerned. The Freelance Writers’ Guild of the Philippines (FWGP/The Guild), in its effort to educate, inform, and empower the abovementioned groups of workers, has invited Atty. Alvin Liao Alburo to a series of talks on these three relevant issues. The talks, What The Law Says On Intellectual Property, Small Claims Courts, and Contracts, are happening on August 18, 25, and September 8.

Atty. Alburo’s talk on Intellectual Property will be on August 18, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the 3F International Women’s House (Bahay ni Isis) at No. 3 Marunong St., Diliman, Quezon City. His talk on Small Claims Courts will be on August 25, 2018, same time (venue to be announced). And finally, Atty. Alburo’s talk on Contracts will be held on September 8, 2018, also from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon (venue to be announced).

Atty. Alvin Liao Alburo is a practicing lawyer, and the Managing Partner of Alburo Villanueva Law Office. Atty. Alburo specializes in civil litigation, with focus on family law (i.e. child custody, support, annulment), labor relations, corporate law and intellectual property law. He regularly conducts seminars before entrepreneurs, specifically in the areas of business law, labor relations and the intellectual property rights including trademarks.

Access to all three talks costs P2,000. For those planning to attend only one or two talks, the fee is at P750 per event. There will be free legal consultations at the end of each event, plus short discussions on investments and retirement options for freelancers. To reserve your slot, or to ask for additional details, please send an SMS to 0921.4800.342.

What The Law Says On… is being organized by the FWGP/The Guild, an organization for freelance writers. The Guild has been around since 2011 and is continuing its work to empower, uphold the welfare, and protect the rights of Filipino freelance writers.
