Museum of the Philippines in cooperation with the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines are pleased to present the international traveling exhibition The Spirit of Budô: The History of Japan’s Martial Arts Exhibition at the National Museum of Fine Arts, National Museum of the Philippines from August 10 to September 30, 2018. Admission is free.
In this exhibition, audiences may learn about the brief history of Japanese martial arts – from traditional battlefield combat techniques (Bujutsu) to popular sports or physical exercise tempering body and spirit (Budô), through originals and reproductions of historical weapons such as arrows, suits of armor, helmets, and other martial arts gear. Also included in the exhibition are materials and photo panels of popular sports and physical exercise such as Kendo, Judo, Sumo, and more. Prior to its exhibition in Manila, it has been shown in countries such as Peru, Canada, and Brazil.
The exhibition is also in line with the objectives of the National Museum to present the artistry and artifacts which embody not just the cultural heritage of the Philippines, but also of Asian cultures such as Japan, in order to create a dialogue about their similarities, differences, connections and intersections.
With strong interest in Japan’s martial arts and Samurai culture in the Philippines, the exhibition will coincide with exciting related events. The Japan Foundation, Manila brings one of the greatest films ever made – legendary Director Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (七人の侍) to be screened at the UP Film Center – Cine Adarna leg of EIGASAI in August. Other events include free demonstrations and workshops of Karate, Judo, Kendo and Arnis in collaboration with Karate Pilipinas, Inc., Philippine Judo Federation, IGA Kendo Club Philippines and Amato Arnis Classic Combat Martial Arts Organization of the Philippines.
