Antique Province, Panay Island, Philippines
More than 30 international and local artists, artists from the islands of Samar, Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Guimaras, and the provinces of Panay—Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Iloilo—4 international and local collectives, more than 60 architecture students from three universities in Panay Island, and more than a dozen Antique-based artists are participating in the 17th edition of VIVA ExCon.
VIVA ExCon is considered the longest-running and largest art biennale in the Philippines. Designed as both an exhibition and a conference, the conference component was meant to provide “a mechanism for the discussion and assessment of parallel artistic development in the islands, give an opportunity for analyses of academic theories and other relevant issues, and serve as the context for a better understanding of various aspects of contemporary art practices.” It was likewise meant to provide a “historical perspective on the various art and craft traditions of the islands and generate resolutions” (VIVA EXCON Folio, 1990).
The 17th Edition of VIVA ExCon includes:

SUBA SA IRAYA
Artists from Antique broached the idea of a counterflow during a dialogue in San Jose last July 30, 2022. They envisioned VIVA ExCon Antique to be an opportunity to look at their existing art practices and find resonance with those that are not familiar and popular streams of influence in the island. Although this trajectory needs further unpacking, “Suba sa Iraya,” a karay-a phrase which means going against a strong current of a river, was decided as the theme. Suba sa iraya may also be translated into English simply as crosscurrent.
LOGO
The logo is a representation of the Visayan patadyong, a traditional wrap-around skirt, with the sampaguita flower design. This type of patadyong is distinctly hand-loomed in Bugasong, Antique. The stripe and plaid pattern of the patadyong is formed to simulate a current, or a cross current when inverted. The subtracted pattern also suggests the letters V and A (also when inverted). The colors are the most common combination found in this patadyong from Antique.
