WHAT WE ALL HAVE IN COMMON IS WE’RE ALL DIFFERENT
a three-man art show by Bullet Dematera, Marius Black, and Guada Ramos Funtilar 🎨
A typical group show usually revolves around a central theme, but three Filipino artists decided to instead create their work, free from any constraints of one. The outcome is a celebration of each other’s own identities and stories. There is no one theme, but there is still harmony found in the difference between the paintings. The fact that each one of them created works by expressing who they are.
WHAT WE ALL HAVE IN COMMON IS WE’RE ALL DIFFERENT is a collection of three shows by three Filipino artists; Bullet Dematera, Marius Black, and Guada Ramos Funtilar. The three artists are well-experienced painters; they showcase all excellent works in oils and water-based media. Each a master of their art styles, which is vastly different from one another but all magnificently done nonetheless.
Bullet Dematera has a vision of passion and beauty. Love for children, especially to his child thinking about his son’s future. Fondness for animals, notably for his dogs as he feels safe and secure when he is with them, forming a special bond. And affection for other people, mainly for those who are facing adversity in war and the pandemic. Through his art, he wishes to portray a brighter future by painting birds and butterflies as a sign of freedom and peace.
Bullet paints the faces of women and children revealing in their eyes their innocence and a longing for hope. He makes flowers bloom in his works as a symbol of finding unnoticed beauty, like the love of our family, the beauty of nature, and the kindness of strangers.
Marius Black captures life in everyday Manila. He paints what he sees in the streets, both hardships and bliss, both the beauty and the ugly to show the truth; that even in the ugly, beauty can still be found in his city. Vagrants and everyday people alike, he does not pity them but is instead inspired by them. His painting reveals Filipinos being resourceful and resilient, not giving up their right to exist, and still finding joy in life in the Philippines.
Alongside his paintings is poetry, providing context for the resilience he has witnessed. To Marius, everyone has a story; people are poems, just waiting to be read.
Guada Ramos Funtilar delves into her childhood memories. She paints love and contentment, those moments when we were children, that we only truly appreciate looking back now as adults. Guada paints the worlds we imagine while we are playing, as well as scenes of our first mistakes and the lessons we learned from them. To her, some things are simple but simple is not meaningless.
Her artworks radiate joy and comfort visually, with pastel colors, and in the essence, with the stories she tells. Guada’s goal is to make people smile when they look at her paintings.
Like these three artists and every one of us, no two are alike. Even twins have different fingerprints. WHAT WE ALL HAVE IN COMMON IS WE’RE ALL DIFFERENT explores how everyone is diverse and distinct. There’s a common saying, “We’re all the same.” But, the more we look at it, everyone is different from the other. Realizing this, we would soon cease to look for ourselves (the good or bad) in others, and the sooner we accept this, the sooner we can accept other people for who they are.
Like the numerous artists who exhibit their paintings in New York, the center of the art world, the pieces in this show stand on their own. The three artists didn’t want to please the crowd by conforming to the expectations of others, not that they don’t want their works to be admired, but because they know, a better path to stand out is just to express one’s self, and paint what is true in one’s heart.
Similar to people migrating from one place to another and being accepted by the nation who lives there, our difference, and our acceptance of them, make us all human. We know, subconsciously or not, WHAT WE ALL HAVE IN COMMON IS WE’RE ALL DIFFERENT.
