SET Artist Run Space
Unit S-III-B, 3rd Floor, The Gallery Building, Amorsolo Street, 1231 Makati
Canadian visual artist, Andrea Lee, opens her 2nd Manila solo exhibition, “Yellow and Koi,” at Set Artist Run Space on May 8, 2015 at 6PM.
Lee claims that she does not have a way with words, so she compensates with photographs and her experimentations in art. For this solo exhibition, Lee presents to us a collection of photos from her travels around the world, as well as her debut into traditional art.
Warm orange and yellows sets the tone for this show. It emanates an inviting aura, coaxing us to take a moment to behold the details of nature and the poetry of landscapes. Through her photographs it is as if we are able to travel with her as she shows us lush fields and mountains, and the details within. We are seeing sights of life with the help of her lens. Her color palette gives us a sense of calm cruising, inviting us to take a moment from our hectic lives to view the calm and still beauty of nature.
Not only are we treated to these lovely photographs; Lee also gives us a glimpse into her endeavors in traditional art. Taking inspiration from her own photographs and others she tries her hand at painting using mixed media on paper of koi and nature. A more playful approach is evident with flowing pencil strokes and paint splatters.
From photographs of nature to the calm silhouettes of people going about their daily lives, to the playful paint splatters and brushstrokes on paper, Lee knows exactly what she wants to show her viewers—and that is beauty.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Andrea Lee is a Canadian photographer currently based in Manila. She travels the world and shares it with the help of her macro lens. She has taken photos in Brunei, Canada, England, Germany, India, Israel, Kuwait, Malaysia, Morocco, Panama, Philippines, Portugal, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, UAE, USA, and Wales. Her first exhibition was held Kuwait and has had multiple solo exhibitions internationally. Two of her books have been published titled, “Treasures in the Sand,” and “Treasures of the Jungle.”
Andrea Lee’s artistic journey started in Spain where she picked up photography as a new way of viewing life. Taking multiple photos of the same subjects on the same walk she took everyday gave her new perspective. According to Lee, constant change can happen in a single movement, with a single shift in light, with a simple change in one’s view. Lee is always taking pictures and is active in her art community. She hosts “Manila Art Day” which is a weekly event where artists come together to create.
