Oftentimes at a loss for words, afraid of being misunderstood, one hesitates to communicate. In the face of this very fear, one finds a safe place to withdraw, building walls, and avoiding contact. This much is true for artist Jade Suayan. Never the verbal type, she has inadvertently kept even those dear to her, outside the walls she has built for herself.
Coincidentally, she has found sanctuary behind walls in the form of her studio. Secluded from the outside world, her studio is where she feels most liberated. Free from physical confrontation, from constant verbal communication, free from the fear of judgement, and from misunderstanding; she has found her peace. With the walls as the only witnesses, she pours both heart and paint out onto her canvases, replacing each word left unsaid with a brushstroke. Here, she learns to express herself visually.
Through painting on street walls, she has extended the boundaries of her studio, taking the peace it offers, with her. By taking her visual way of communicating outside the safe space of her studio, it becomes a metaphor for the breaking through of her personal walls.
In her first solo exhibition, Jade explores her relationship with walls and recounts stories which only they (walls) have seen.
