The UP Vargas Museum presents Kwarantin, a new installation work by pioneering Filipino artist Junyee. The work will be open for viewing at the Vargas Museum Lawn beginning 14 March 2020, at 6 in the evening.

Kwarantin is Junyee’s spare take on a timely issue that bears immense weight on people all over the world uncertain about a possible contagion. With the assistance of the Pitopito Artists Group Cavite, Junyee constructs bamboo beds enclosed in tall, uneven rails and with black marks dispersed across the space. The beds are strewn on the museum lawn to index a state of unrest. The artist, believing in the endless possibilities brought about by bamboo as material, invites viewers to reflect on the limits set not only by the virus on everyday activity, but also by the tentative responses of governments towards the viral problem.

Junyee (b. 1942) is a Los Baños-based artist known for pioneering installation art in the country and for the use of organic and indigenous materials in his works. Born in Agusan del Norte, he received his fine arts education from the University of the Philippines Diliman and had National Artist Napoleon Abueva as mentor. He has achieved critical acclaim from local and international awarding bodies and his art has been exhibited locally and internationally. The artist also established Sining Makiling, an art gallery in the campus of University of the Philippines Los Baños.
