(b. 1976) Born in Tondo, Manila, Anton del Castillo earned his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines Diliman. Most of his works delve into ideas of war and religion, and congruently deviate from the contemporary status quo. Anton’s career blossomed from his first solo show “Under One Roof” held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (2005), from which his more than 20 group and solo exhibitions blossomed in the local and international art scene. His artworks’ exposure was catapulted by various art awards and grants, most notably the Asian Cultural Council Grant that gave him the opportunity to live and study in New York.
In his nearly 20 years as an artist, Anton has proven his prolific hand and ever-evolving style. He has participated in over 60 group exhibitions, mounted 21 solo exhibitions in galleries and museums in the Philippines, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the United Kingdom; and has received 27 awards and recognitions for both his paintings and sculpture, including being Finalist at the Sculpture Competition in Oita, Japan (’18,’14, ’12), and the Schoeni Prize at the Sovereign Asian Art Competition in Hong Kong (’14, ‘11).
