“Will-O’-The Wisp”, a solo show by Ella Hipolito at Gallery Blue. Exhibit opens on June 9, 2021.

Ella Hipolito admits: “I fancy fantasy.”

The artist’s latest flight to the world of the magical and the mystical takes her to the story of the Will-O’-The Wisp, or the ghostly light seen by travelers at night. According to legend, the Will-O’-The Wisp initially appears harmless or even playful to wanderers, before luring them off the beaten path and into danger.

This narrative goes under revision in Hipolito’s new solo exhibition, simply titled Will-O’-The Wisp, wherein the artist focuses on the figure’s role as an ambassador of hope. A representative of opportunity amid adversity.

In this exhibition, Hipolito showcases abstract works of flowing strands. The movement is inspired by that of a betta fish, which are celebrated for their graceful fins. Meanwhile, Hipolito stays in the water for the title of some pieces that are inspired by marine mythological creatures. These are “Sirens of Pandora” and “Sea Nymphs of the Blue Water.”
