Siefred Guilaran’s melancholic body of work for “Pagtatantiya” (meaning: to approximate or estimate) is less about a particular genre or medium than it is about a sensibility. There is a definite and unrelenting artistic gaze in which emotions and intellect are in constant tension. In this manner, the artworks become a balance between two dissimilar worlds. This set of associations serves as a rhetorical junction that defines the harmony between emotion and logic.

In reference to his paintings, Guilaran builds his oeuvre in the context of his life and family, especially his father, whose inspirations and thought process were based on. The exhibit is also a self-investigation on the artist and his personal journey to fatherhood.

The artworks reflect on the two-sidedness of human nature: the black and the white, the good and the bad. But Guilaran believes that without embracing discomfort and unpredictability, one limits the fullness of the most important experiences that come along with it: love, comfort, trust, and belonging.

Siefred Guilaran’s “Pagtatantiya” is an exploration of analogies between the human condition and nature. The exhibit seeks to examine ideas of resilience, transformation, rebirth, tension, balance, transition, uncertainty, and impermanence. [Text by Grace Ng]
